FOLK ART AND TRIBAL ART

India, with all its vibrant cultural diversity, has always been known as the land of folk and tribal art. Each region and land in India has its own pattern and style of art, which is called folk art. This heritage is passed from one generation to another and is hence still thriving, especially in the rural regions of the country. Folk art has evolved over the years but has maintained its authenticity and mystic intact. Though there are many artisans who create folk art in the modern days, antique folk art is revered for its rarity and value.

Unlike traditional art which is completely made on artistic merit and with the intention of creating collectible art, antique folk art at the time of its creation was not meant as art. Tribal art paintings were primarily created for utility and decoration rather than artistic aesthetics. It is almost a form of storytelling. Folk art has a bit of naivety, rawness, mystic and authenticity as it did not follow any specific rules of traditional fine art.

Antique wooden tribal art was produced by the numerous indigenous cultures, tribes, farmers, and traders who resided in India. Folk art does not just include just paintings but encompasses a whole range of things like masks, pottery, ornaments, home decorations, clothes, music and dance accessories. All these vintage artefacts showcase the cultural heritage of that region.

Some of the popular antique folk and tribal art that is thriving in India is Madhubani paintings from Bihar, Warli painting from Maharashtra, Tanjore paintings from Tamil Nadu, Pattachitra from Odisha, Miniature painting from Rajasthan, Kalamkari from Andhra Pradesh, and Kalighat paintings from Bengal. Currently, traditional folk art from India has great potential even in the international market. Antique tribal and folk art is very popular amongst antique art collectors.
