CHRISTIAN ART

Christian art is the religious art that predominantly uses themes and legends from Christianity. The central theme of Christian art is the artistic depiction of the life and times of Jesus Christ, scenes from the Old Testament and some of the popular Christian saints. Most of the Christian paintings usually depict a specific saint, a person or an event of religious significance.
Some of the earliest surviving Christian art is from the time of origin of Christianity. The oldest Christian art dates to the second century discovered on the walls of Christian tombs in the catacombs of Rome. In the very beginning, most of the Christian art was inspired by the iconography of Greek and Roman art and style. It also evolved through the middle ages and the modern period and adopted aesthetics from Byzantine art, Classical style, Renaissance, and other art forms. Antique Christian art is revered by collectors not only for their religious significance but also for their rarity, value, and aesthetics.
In ancient Christian art, Jesus was represented with symbols like Fish (Ichthys), peacock, Lamb of god or an anchor. Later the symbols were personified like Jonah, Daniel in the Lion’s den, and Orpheus charming the animals. The most popular of the antique Christian art being ‘The Good Shepherd’ depicted Jesus as a young beardless man collecting sheep in the pastures. The depiction of Jesus in pictorial form was controversial during the times of Early church. The depiction of Jesus in the current standardized conventional physical form took several centuries. It has largely remained stable since then.
Most of the sculptures, altars, tables, textiles, paintings, monstrance, and chairs used in Churches form a major part of the Christian art.
